Notes

We are grateful to Dr George Keyes for confirming the attribution to Wieringen on the basis of a color photograph (written communication of 14 November 2005). The lively penwork of the present drawing is close to a that of a similar subject in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (see G.S. Keyes, Mirror of Empire: Dutch Marine Art of the Seventeenth Century, Minneapolis, 1990, no. 95).
