Sir Hugo de Bathe, 5th Bt., who owned this portrait, is perhaps best known for having married the late Victorian beauty and actress Lillie Langtry (1853-1929) who was previously the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. The portrait was sold in 1931, and is recorded the following year, in a photograph in the Witt Library, as being in the collection of Viscount Burnham, Sir Hugo's brother-in-law.
