NOTE

Still lifes by Cornelis Kick are very rare, although they are his highest prized pictures. He began his career by following in his father's footsteps and painting portraits. It is only later in his career, after becoming familiar with and impressed by the work of Jan Davidz. de Heem, that he started working in this new genre. Although his works are sparse due to the meticulous attention he paid to each detail of his compositions, he rapidly became famed for his representations of tulips and hyacinths in particular. This painting is similar in style to a signed work in the Daisy Linda Ward colection, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (see E. Gamar-Koeltzsch, Holländische Stillebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, 1995, vol. 2, p. 557, no. 195/3, reproduced).
