signed and dated lower right Corneille/ van Spaendonck/ 1817 oil on paper, laid down on canvas After an apprenticeship with Guillaume-Jacques Herreyns in Antwerp, Cornelis joined his brother Gérard in Paris in 1773. It is possible that the present composition was inspired by his brother's work on marble of 1791 of A Bunch of Grapes Hanging from a Wall (see Literature below, cat. no. 7, illus. p. 102).
