Notes

The son of Sir Robert Heath (see lot 225), the sitter was educated at Cambridge, and studied law at the Inner Temple. As a result of his father's efforts to educate his sons in the manner which he himself had been raised, John was appointed Attorney to the Duchy of Lancaster under Charles II following the Restoration.

Another, slightly later, portrait of the sitter by Johnson, signed and dated 1632, descended in the family of the sitter's brother, Edward, and was sold in London, Sotheby's, 23rd November 2006, lot 15.
