Item Overview

Description

Cowan Dobson (1893-1980) Moll Flanders Oil on canvas Signed lower right 76cm x 63cm Moll Flanders is the eponymous Heroine of the novel 'The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders' by Daniel Defoe publish in 1722. The heroine, an orphan girl 'Moll Flanders' turns to a life of crime in order to improve position in society. After many hardships, Defoe transports her to Virginia where she finally finds prosperity. The model for the painting was Muriel Leach, a close friend of the artist who sat for many of Dobson's works. With her extravagant costume and bawdy looks she certainly fits the part of the aging, lascivious heroine. The costume was in fact made to commemorate the freezing over of the river Thames in Charles II's reign.
