Description

CRISPIN VAN DE PASSE. (Dutch, 1593-1667). Twenty-Eight plates from the Hortus Floridus, published 1614. Some plates by Simon de Passe, some Willem de Passe. Each with later hand-coloring, and initialed by the colorist "DW". The "Hortus Floridus" includes a large number of flowering bulbs, such as narcissus, tulips, and crocus, that were becoming the rage in Holland at the time and reached their critical peak of popularity with the "Tulipomania" financial crash in 1637. The "Hortus Floridus" was among the earliest botanical works with engraved illustrations to depict the specimens in natural settings, planted in the earth , and surrounded by insects. - 8 in. x 5 1.2 in., the plates; 10 1/2 in. x 7 1/2 in., the sheets
