Among the new generation of Chinese artists to turn their attention to the closed Communist period, Cui Xiuwen has concentrated on the role of women. In the present image, two tiny sitters identified by the white shirts and red scarves of the Pioneers, sit in a narrow picture space which describes their limited options, overtopped by a massive red weight of expectation.
