CURLY BARDKADUBBU 1924-1987 NGALKUNBURRIYAYMI (THE FEMALE RAINBOW SERPENT) C.1978 153 by 59 cm Natural earth pigments on eucalyptus bark Bears artist's name, title, language group (Gunwimggu) (sic) and a description of the story depicted on original Oenpelli label on the reverse Provenance: Painted in the Oenpelli region, Central Arnhem Land Shirley Collins, Darwin Private collection, Darwin The label on the reverse reads: 'Ngalkunburriyaymi is the daughter of Jingana, the all-powerful Rainbow Serpent, who gave birth to a son and a daughter. Ngalyod, the son, is also a Rainbow Serpent, much feared throughout Western Arnhem Land. Ngalkunburriyaymi is less feared, although still very powerful.'
