(Currier & Ives) Maurer, Louis (1832-1932). The American Fireman, Facing the Enemy. Original hand-colored lithograph. Large folio, 22¾x18¾", conserved by Karen Alkin of Northern California Art Conservators, mounted on archival paper backing, acid-free matting and foam board, period walnut frame with new gold fillet. New York: Currier & Ives, 1858 Shows full length view of a fireman hosing down flames on right, standing on rubble, with smoke, damaged building in background. Hand-coloring well-executed and still remarkably fresh in appearance. Important piece, which is pictured in Currier's Price Guide to Currier & Ives Prints, page 26. Part of The Life of a Fireman series. Conningham, 153; Gale, 165. Mild marginal darkening; else near fine or better.
