Lot 93: DANET, Pierre (1650-1709).  A Complete Dictionary of the Greek and Roman Antiquities. London: John Nicholson, 1700. 4to. Printed in double column, one folding map only (?of 3), tables, with 4 blank pages of unprinted text [?as issued] (some browning, spotting and staining). Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards (joints splitting, rubbed, [?]later lettering-piece). Provenance: From the Collection of the late Hans Fellner; William Dodwell 1767 (signature at head of B1). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. William Dodwell (1709-85) was a theological writer and Archdeacon of Berkshire. See DNB. The blank recto of A2 bears a pencil signature "Samuel Johnson 1735." J. D. Fleeman's "Preliminary Handlist of Books Associated with Dr Samuel Johnson" (Oxford, 1984) establishes that Johnson had read the entry under "Amazones" in Danet's Dictionary for his own translation of Guyon's "Histoire des Amazones" in 1741 although the youthful signature is unlikely to be that of the famous lexicographer.
