David Mzuguno began his career in the arts with the Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society. He had more commercial success than the other painters and in 1989 he left to pursue his own technique, moving the Tingatinga style in a new direction. He spent the next few years painting for a Japanese collector, a guest at the University of Dar es Salaam from his home in Mlandizi, Tanzania. His roots in the Kilimanjaro region where he was born inspire the rich depictions of nature in Mzuguno’s paintings. In 2013, he held a solo exhibition at the Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam. In 2009, he participated in a residency programme in China at the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute. He passed away in 2010, shortly after a very successful exhibition in Kampala.
