Item Overview

Description

AN IMPORTANT, HISTORICAL DOCUMENT SIGNED BY ROBERT MORRIS. Robert Morris (1734-1806), was one of only two men to sign the three most important documents in American History: the Decloration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Today, Morris is considered to be one of the most important Founding Fathers of the United States, playing a crucial role that paved the way for America's future. Robert Morris was a Philidelphia merchant who also oversaw the striking of America's first coins, organizer of the North American Bank, and financed the Revolutionary War. This is a rare stock certificate signed by Robert Morris and James Marshall, for five shares of the North American Land Company, Philadelphia, Pa., March 23, 1795. The shares represented by this certificate are numbered 13,442 - 13,446, certificate #858. This document is countersigned by James Marshall (son-in-law to Morris and brother to Chief Justice John Marshall). The certificate, along with an etching print of Morris, has been professionally matted and framed for display. Robert Morris (1734-1806), James Greenleaf (1765-1843), and John Nicholson (1757-1800) founded the North American Land Company on February 20, 1795. The North American Land Company was one of the largest land trusts in American history. The land company had 30,000 shares of stock, each valued at $100, and a total of 6 million acres of land in the District of Columbia, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Some of those associated with the company include: James Greenleaf, Robert James, Tobias Lear, Robert Morris, John Nicholson, Benjamin Tilghman, and James Wilson. The North American Land Company was plagued by serious financial difficulties and all three of its founders were sent to debtors’ prison. The North American Land Company remained in existence until 1872.
