DELFT 1647 - POST, Pieter (1608-69). Begraeffenisse van Syne Hoogheyt Frederick Henrick, by der gratien Gods Prince van Orange, Grave van Nassau Gouverneur over Gelderland, Holland, &c. Capiteyn Generael, ende Admirael der Vereenighde Nederlanden. Amsterdam: Nikolaes van Ravesteyn for the author at The Hague and P. Nolpe in Amsterdam, 1651.
Large 2o (420 by 325 mm). Collation: A-K2; 30 full-sheet engraved plates by PIETER NOLPE (1613-53) after Post, ALL COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, more than half HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD, a few details in SILVER. (Split in centerfold of two plates, some marginal foxing, last plate somewhat soiled.) Small original cancel-slip on pl. 23 correcting the identification of the Elector of Brandenburg. Contemporary English gilt-panelled vellum, gilt edges, (binding soiled and somewhat warped). Provenance: J. Gardner, 453 Strand, next door to Golden Cross (pencil inscription).

Post's magnificent pictorial record of the long funeral procession that accompanied the body of FREDERICK HENRY (1584-1647), third hereditary stadtholder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, from The Hague to the New Church in Delft. Post was one of Holland's most important Baroque architects, responsible with Jacob van Campen for the Mauritshuis and Huis ten Bosch, two of the finest buildings of The Hague's Golden Age. The book appears to have been issued both in colored and uncolored state and since the artist was his own publisher the work will have been done according to his instructions; gold (and occasionally silver) was applied to standards, coats-of-arms, horse cloaks, etc. FINE COPY. Landwehr 114; Lipperheide Sd 23; Vinet 638.
