Notes

The same view can be found in another work by Alsloot in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels, which is signed and dated 1616 (see Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, catalogue inventaire de la peinture ancienne, Brussels 1984, p. 3, no. 3457, reproduced). Both paintings were formerly thought to depict the abbey of La Cambre, but although the site is similar, the architecture is not, and the view must be considered a capriccio of various of the abbeys set among ponds in the rolling woodland to the south and east of Brussels.
