Bel échange avec un ancien ami autour des Considérations sur les causes de la grandeur des Romains et de leur décadence.
24 juillet. Il déplore le relâchement de leur commerce : « je vous suis tout aussy veritablement attaché que je l'étois dans les temps où j'avois le bonheur de vous voir tous les jours »... Il prie son ami de lui « procurer un exemplaire de l'édition de Hollande de l'ouvrage que vous venez de donner au public. L'amitié seule pourroit me déterminer à estre très empressé de voir un ouvrage de vous, mais les suffrages du public et de gens dont vous respectez le jugement augmentent fort le desir que j'en ay. Peutestre trouverez-vous la proposition de voir une édition revue par Mrs les Censeurs Royaux autre que celle qu'ils ont approuvée un peu hardie, mais mettez vous à ma place, je me mets à la vostre : Je fais un livre que je crois bon puisque je le rends public, je prends la liberté d'y penser à mon aise, je suis obligé par complaisance d'y faire quelques corrections, vous me le demandez tel que je lay fait dabord. Je vous connois assez pour estre sûr que je ne seray point compromis, et [...] pour que l'on ne scache point qui l'a mis à la poste »...
8 août. Il voulait attendre, pour remercier Montesquieu, d'avoir « leu le livre tout entier. Il ne m'a pas encore été possible de le faire parce que tout le monde me l'a arraché des mains. [...] J'en suis aux causes de la Decadence. Je ne doute point que cette partie ne soit aussy interressante que l'autre. Je ne scay même si l'histoire n'y fournit pas plus de détails et de réflexions. D'ailleurs les révolutions qui se font presque toujours assez brusquement sont aussi marquez par des circonstances plus éclatantes que l'accroissement de la puissance qui se fait insensiblement et par le concours d'une infinité de circonstances grandes et petites qui se succèdent dans une longue suite de temps. Quoy qu'il en soit, je ne demende à cette seconde partie que de me faire le même plaisir que m'a fait la première. Me permettez vous cependant de vous demander sur cette première si vous n'avez pas regardé la politique des Romains au sujet de la religion comme un des grands moyens qui ayent été employez pour reunir à eux tous les peuples. Machiavel qui a traité à peu près le même sujet que vous insiste sur ce point. Il me semble aussy qu'il mérite quelqu'attention, je le trouve susceptible de belles et grandes ideez, on pourroit même y en ajouter de fines dont l'application sourde au système actuel de l'Europe feroit effet »...

COLLECTION OF PURCHASES

If payment is made by check or by wire transfer, lots may not be withdrawn until the payment has been cleared. FAILING RECEIPT OF PAYMENT
