This second image of Nectar making his rounds not only places him in profile as he takes in the viewer-it has him catching sight of the bench that must look pretty inviting to someone who's been on their feet all day (see following lot). "Today, it's impossible to know if Etienne Nicolas called Dransy or if [Dransy] came to him with the idea. Being an unknown, the second assumption appears more logical . . . On the other hand, we know with certainty than Nectar was born in 1922 and legend has it that a delivery man, named Paven, probably furiously concerned with wine, served as his model" (Nectar/Nicolas, unnumbered [p. 7]). Apparently, the only poster for Nicolas that bears the artist's name upon it is the original Nectar design (see previous lot), with all of the many others to follow having been done by other artists that drew inspiration from Dansy's original; hence the subscript "d'apres Dransy" that appears here. Rare!
