Notes

'I think this gives a good impression of the kind of country you get at the edge of a range of mountains. Cultivated land running up into the foothills. Derwent Lees painted a lot with Augustus John at one time. His colour is always good.' Sir David Scott

Derwent Lees was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1885. After studying in Paris, Lees met J.D. Innes in 1905 at the Slade where he studied until 1907 and taught drawing between 1908 and 1918. In 1912, Lees went with Innes on a painting trip to Collioure on the Mediterranean. Lees returned to Collioure with Augustus John in 1914.
