Dickens' Life Illustrated by Barnard, Archer, Thomas. Charles Dickens: A Gossip About His Life, Works and Characters. London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., c. 1894. Elephant folio, publisher's half calf with gilt both covers and spine, gilt page edges. Includes 18 photogravure reproductions of Frederick Barnard's (1846-1896) character sketches tipped in. Although Barnard does not appear to have illustrated any of Dickens' works while the author was alive, his character sketches are among the best-known interpretations of these characters, with many still being reproduced today.
Very light toning of pages, minor foxing. Taped front hinge. A few photogravures have bends on verso (esp. first and third), being printed on heavy paper that has bent over preceding pages. All still have tissue guards and overall are in excellent condition.
