The murder sent shock waves through Ireland. Some saw it as part of a Catholic plot to execute Protestant landlords that would soon spread out of Stokestown, County Roscommo. Major Mahon owned Strokestown Park that was in massive debt, the land had been divided into unlivable plots and the tenants had no way to pay the rent and were years in arrears, he began to 'encourage' his tenants to emigrate and some one thousand left in May and June 1847. He was ambushed and shot dead walking home from a Board of Guardians meeting, three men were charged with his murder and two were hanged.
