Item Overview

Description

"She urged Crona, the she-bear, forward until the bear lumbered over to the howling infant," acrylic on acetate, 410 x 305 mm. Matted and framed. Published: The Race for the Golden Apples by Claire Martin (New York: Dial, 1991). Leo and Diane Dillon are the only illustrators to have won the Caldecott Medal two years in a row. They were pioneers in the introduction of multicultural picture books. They also jointly designed book jackets, magazine illustrations, record album covers and other commercial art. The two artists met in art school, married and always worked as a team, conceiving and completing each piece together. Their art was was done by what they called "the Third Artist," not two distinct individuals but a marriage of the two. That Third Artist did things that each alone could never have achieved.
