Notes

« My philosophy is to bring joy, fancy and beauty in the ordinary everyday objects» Pavlos, 2005.

Dionyssopoulos Pavlos was born in Greece in 1930. He entered the Art School in 1949.

During his studies, he gets several grants to pursue studies in Paris.
When he decides to move in for goods at the end of the fifties, he discovers the Paris of the New Realists.

He goes out with Calder, Giacometti and, of course, César, Yves Klein and Pierre Restany.
His studio is situated rue de Vaugirard in front of the one of Dubuffet.
His new urban work environment takes him away from painting. He begins to use a new material: poster paper cuts. He works on the effects of density, on the colours.
The poster papers become an essential element in his artistic language.
His work distinguishes him from the « affichistes » group of the time (Hains, Villéglé, Rotella). Pierre Restany, instigator of the New Realists group, noticed him during the Réalités Nouvelles show in 1963. This meeting is decisive in his career.
The work of Pavlos moves fast. After Abstraction and Baroque, the artist is looking for a new way of expressivity.
By giving to his paper-cuts the form of everyday objects, Pavlos moves away from the New Realists and becomes closer to the Pop Art artists. However, he remains a free electron in the art world. He is not committed to any artistic movement.
Pavlos recreates the everyday objects: ties, shirts, cigarettes, bottles, and fruits. He brings colours and lightness to the world.
In 2005 and in 2008, Pavlos paid tribute to the American Pop Art (Galerie Laurent Strouk) and to the Italian cinema (Galerie Guy Pieters). In 2013 pays tribute to the Super Hereos.
