Description

Doug Laird's "Curious Fox" original acrylic on canvas painting. This original painting is of a farm scene. There is a little fox family in the foreground, a stream in the middle of the painting, an old red tractor, and a barn in the background.

Douglas was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1946. He became interested in art very early in life. By the age of fifteen, he apprenticed at an advertising agency / art studio in his home town. During that time he also attended the Edinburgh College of Art where he studied life drawing and draped life extensively. For many years Douglas travelled throughout North America and Europe. His travels have strongly influenced the subject matters and mediums used in his paintings. Douglas enjoys working with and feels comfortable in all mediums; and his subjects include landscape, marine, nostalgia, still life, western, wildlife, children and everyday activities. Douglas, now a Canadian citizen, emigrated to Canada in 1965; and currently resides with his wife and daughter in Oakville, Ontario. In the last few years, Doug has gained even more recognition. This includes being juried and contracted by the Royal Canadian Mint. The Mint has struck legal tender coins using images of Doug Laird. As such, Doug has achieved more and more recognition as a world class artist. Lairds original paintings are very conservatively prices compared to other similar artists.

An extraordinary draftsman, Doug Laird, has absolute control over the finest details of a drawing. A great deal of time is spent creating and forming an idea into a pleasing composition that tells a story.

Once Doug has worked out the basics with thumbnail sketches, he then incorporates all of the desired elements into the scene. At that time, Doug will be thinking about the medium he'll use to best capture the effect he is after. Once that is sorted out, a more comprehensive drawing is done in proportion to the final piece. He gathers the necessary reference which often includes field studies or photography and at times, both.

If watercolour is the chosen medium, Doug will draw the sketch onto watercolour board. He uses watercolour board rather than watercolour paper. He prefers the board because he can work at a continuous pace without fear of the board buckling and creating dips and valleys where paint tends to form pools. This can take a frustratingly long time to dry.

Doug seldom uses anything finer than a number seven brush. Larger brushes can have as fine a point as smaller ones. There is more body to a larger brush which allows more control over the paint. Once into a painting, Doug basically sticks to his original sketch. However, things develop with various twists and turns along the way in order to achieve the desired effect. A great deal of time is spent looking at the painting, studying it before the final brush strokes are applied.

The auctioneer is the legal representative of Oakwood Auctions. As such, the Auctioneer's decisions during a live auction are without dispute and are final.
Oakwood Auctions reserves the right to reject any bid for any reason whatsoever. If there is a dispute between bidders or the validity of a bid, Oakwood Auctions will make the final determination.
If a winning bid is not paid in full in the designated amount of time, Oakwood Auctions can, at their discretion, re-auction the item and the delinquent bidder will be invoiced for any shortfall of said item.
The bidder must understand and adhere to the "Conditions of Sale" and "Terms and Conditions" prior to placing any bids.

Conditions of Sale
1. Each lot sold will have a buyer's premium of 20% added to the hammer price (winning bid), resulting in the total purchase price.
2. Canadian bidders are required to pay their respective provincial sales tax.
3. Oakwood Auctions reserves the right to cancel, combine, or separate a collection of lots without prior notice.
4. Bids will be accepted at the sole discretion of the auctioneer.
5. The auctioneer may bid on behalf of the consignor as authorized. The auctioneer may also accept telephone bids and absentee bids.
6. Full risk and responsibility will be placed on the winning bidder with regard to payment and shipping. Said bidder must adhere to all terms, conditions and applicable laws.
7. The winning bidder is responsible for making payment to Oakwood Auctions along with any arrangement(s) relating to procurement of winning lot(s), satisfactory to Oakwood Auction's terms and conditions. Any other arrangements regarding payment approved by Oakwood Auctions must be in writing from an Oakwood Auctions representative.
8. Winning bidders must make payment within 48 hours from the date of receiving the invoice. If this condition is not met, a charge of $15.00 USD per diem will be incurred by the winning bidder. The lot will become the property of the winning bidder only after full payment is received and shipping/procurement arrangements have been established to the satisfaction of Oakwood Auctions.
9. Once the auction closes, lots which have been won will be stored at Oakwood Auctions facilities at the sole risk of the winning bidder, until paid in full and shipping/procurement arrangements (satisfactory to Oakwood Auctions in writing) have been made.
10. All lots are sold "as-is" and do not come with any warrantees or guarantees of any kind.
