DOUGLAS, James (1753-1819) A dissertation on the antiquity of the Garth [sic]. London: Lodographic Press, 1785. Small 2° (255 x 171mm). 10 tinted aquatints, of which one is a vignette on the title with another vignette in the text, plate V with the caption 'This fossil in the possession of Sir Joseph Banks', all the plates signed with the cipher 'JD' so presumably by the author. (Lacking the dedication to Sir Joseph Banks, plate I with light dampstain, very light spotting to a couple of leaves only.) Modern quarter calf. Provenance: Salford Free Library (faint ink stamp and ms. shelfmark to title, ink stamp to one text leaf and to verso of plates).

(Some light browning, spotting and off-setting to plates.) Original publishers boards, printed paper label to spine, uncut (covers lightly spotted, extremities rubbed, head and tail caps defective, spine label chipped, evidence of labels removed from pastedowns). Provenance: Thomas W. Twiggs (old ink inscription to f.f.e.p.).SECOND EDITION. Challinor 109 (1823 first edition).

Contemporary panelled calf (rubbed and worn). Provenance: John Lenthall (armorial bookplate and signature to title); Franklin institute, Philadelphia (perforated stamp to title and U4).
