Item Overview

Description

STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS (1813-1861) American politician who drafted the Kansas-Nebraska bill, most remembered for his memorable debates with Abraham Lincoln throughout Illinois. A.L.S. as Congressman, 3pp. 4to., Quinsy [?], Sept. 14, 1845 to Congressman John A. McClernand (1812-1900), in part: "...You have doubtless watched the progress of the war waged against us and our colleagues by Walter[?] Force & Co. Failed in this base attempt to [illeg.] me as an instrument against my colleagues they now seek to reek [sic] their vengeance on my head...They have changed their tactics recently still the object being the same. They seek to destroy the whole delegation, but wish to divide & sue one half against the other. Hence the articles in the Register about the Harbor Revenues...My constituents are satisfied & so are yours if I may judge from the evidences I have had of public sentiment...Thy house already done all the corn they sow. I am for making no terms with them. They have commenced the war & destracted [sic] the party and now let them take the consequences... Of course our correspondence will be strictly confidential...". Small loss from seal tear affects a few words of text, a few minor toned spots, usual folds, otherwise very good. $150-200
