Description

458. JOHN W. DRAPER (1811-1882) American scientist and pioneer daguerreotypist, considered the "father of American photography"; he made the first successful portrait daguerreotype, and the first photographs of the moon; for a while, was in partnership with Samuel Finley Breese Morse; made important contributions in the fields of radiant energy, photochemistry, and electric telegraphy. Choice partly-printed D.S. "Jno. W. Draper", 1 p. oblong narrow 4to. (2-3/4 in. x 7-1/4 in.), New York City, June 23, 1879, a bank check drawn on the "North River Bank" and made payable "F. Kinder" for "Twenty one 56/100" dollars. Accomplished entirely in his hand and boldly signed at the conclusion. Closed slash cancellation, not touching signature. Revenue stamp at far left initialed "JWD." Endorsed by Kinder and others on verso. In very good condition. $200-300
