Notes

There is a painting by Ebenezer Newman Downard in the permanent collection at Tate Britain entitled A Mountain Path at Capel Curig, Wales, 1860.

Downard was a genre and landscape painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1849 and 1889. In his use of meticulous detail and clear, bright light, some of his landscapes show the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite painters, in particular William Holman Hunt (1827-1910). The present lot also clearly shows the influence of the Cranbrook School of artists.
