Item Overview

Description

Echter, Michael
Munich 1812 - 1879

Hylas and the Nymphs. Signed lower right: M Echter pinx. Oil on card. 39 x 32.5cm. Framed.
An old, handwritten label on the back of the frame.

Provenance:
- according to a spoken report, the painting comes from the collection of the Stadtarchitekten Echter, Berlin.
- Private collection, Berlin.

Echter usually chose mythological subjects for his works. He was famous as a fresco painter, and was the leading artist for Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung's series, which was painted by order of Ludwig II in the theatre entrance of his residence. Echter travelled to Berlin with Wilhelm von Kaulbach in 1847 to carry out the frescoes for the "Neues Museum". We assume that this painting of Hylas' abduction by the nymphs was carried out during this Berlin period, probably for a private commissioner.
