Description

signed and dated E Barclay 1898 l.l., oil on canvas 92 by 66.5 cm.; 35 1/4 by 26 1/4 in. Trained in Dresden, Edgar Barclay was dividing his time between Italy and London in the late 1860s. In Rome he became a close friend of Giovanni Costa, with whom he shared an exhibition in the Casino Pincio in 1874, and he is now best known for his association with the "Etruscans", the group of British artists painting predominantly Italian landscapes. He returned to England and from the 1880s painted lyrical rural subjects, mainly in Hampshire and Dorset.
