Wellington holding the reins in his left hand and a telescope in his right, on a naturalistic base, inscribed COTTERELL SCULPT. PUBLISHED AS THE ACT DIRECTS BY R & S GARRARD, PANTON ST. LONDON, 18TH JUNE 1837, mid brown patination, raised on a shaped oval plinth with gilt lettering inscribed Arthur Duke of Wellington, 64cm high

Cotterell attended the Royal Academy Schools in 1820 and exhibited there from 1822 to 1858. From 1833 he was in charge of R&S Garrard's design, producing equestrian bronzes such as the present example, as well as large groups in silver and bronze, centrepieces and other decorative works of art. The present model was originally designed in silver, and was displayed on the sideboard at Wellington's London residence, Apsley House.

An example of this edition was sold at Christies, London, 26 September 2001, lot 533.
