The Indian Blanket Flower usually appears in the late spring and signals the beginning of summer in most parts of Texas. With their showy bands of red and yellow blazing across wide swaths of land, they do indeed resemble colorful Indian blankets.

Legend has it that the flower was once all yellow and was a favorite of the Aztecs. Young Aztec women would decorate their hair with crowns of the golden flowers. When Cortez came and the land was drenched with the blood of the trusting inhabitants, the much loved flower, in pity, caught the blood of the innocents as they fell.....and to this day the red stains remain on the flower.
