'Clou' is French for 'showstopper.' In this poster for a live show called 'Around the World,' producer Louis Dumoulin proclaims that his presentation is the main event of the 1900 Paris World's Fair. There's no question that Dumoulin's troupe put on a big show on the fairgrounds at the Champ de Mars: dancing, magic acts, acrobatics and crafts from storied Eastern and Western countries. And if you were put off by the glowering faces from far-off lands, you could amuse yourself with an array of exotic nibbles. Although Dumoulin touts himself as the 'official painter for the French marine ministry,' he was smart enough to get a commercial pro to do the work required here.
