Item Overview

Description

Edouard Louis Dubufe (French, 1820-1883) "Portrait of Rosa Bonheur with Bull", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1857" lower right, 51-1/2" x 37". Presented in a carved giltwood frame. Provenance: Acquired from Kurt E. Schon, Ltd, New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1986 by a private Baton Rouge collector. Reference: Dore Ashton, "Rosa Bonheur A Life and a Legend". Note: This is a version after the artist's "Portrait of Mlle. Rosa Bonheur," that is now in the collection of the Musee National du Chateau de Versailles. While posing for the original painting, Ms. Bonheur asked Dubufe if she could paint her favorite bull instead of the table he had placed by her arm. He graciously accepted her offer and subsequently the painting was exhibited in the Paris Salon.
