NOTE

Moyse was one of the most important Jewish genre painters of the 19th century: "Moyse, like most Parisian Jews, was from the Eastern Alsace region, where a traditional way of life took precedence over the modernizing tendencies of the metropolitan areas. ...Moyse's biblical scenes gained him recognition both by the Paris Salon and by aristocratic Parisian Jews who were pleased to see their ancestors depicted as noble and sophisticated" (Susan Tumarkin Goodman, The Emergence of Jewish Artists in 19th century Europe, The Jewish Museum, New York, 2002, p. 178-179).
