Notes

This image is an illustration for Psalm LXIX entitled 'To the chief musician upon Shoshannin. A Psalm of David' beginning: 'Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters where the floods overflow me.'

A follower of Burne-Jones, Clifford was a portraitist and painter of biblical genre. His Royal Academy exhibits were all conventional female portraits, but he exhibited biblical scenes at the Grosvenor Gallery.
