CATALOGUE NOTE

Edward Hodges Cree served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy between 1837 and 1869. His last seagoing appointment was in 1861 aboard the H.M.S.Orion. In June 1861 the ship was noted as being somewhere around the Ionian Islands where Cree drew the present watercolours. He retired from service later that year
