CATALOGUE NOTE

The Ascot Gold Cup was first run in 1807 and for a short period was known as The Emperor of Russia's Plate but the race reverted to its original title upon the outbreak of the Crimean War. The present picture depicts the 1849 race won by Van Tromp, a brown colt foaled in 1844 by Lanercost out of Barbelle. Van Tromp was owned by Lord Eglinton who also won the race the following year with Van Tromp's half brother, The Flying Dutchman. Van Tromp had previously won the St. Leger in 1847.
