Portrait of Aline Henderson, three-quarter length, in a blue dress, seated on a swing signed with initials and dated 'E.J.G./94' (lower right) and with inscription 'Aline Henderson./(Mrs J.T. Wigan)/E.J. Gregory R.A./1894.' (on an old label attached to the backboard) pencil and watercolour, heightened with bodycolour 231/4 x 17 in. (59.1 x 43.2 cm.) PROVENANCE By descent in the family of the sitter. NOTES Aline Henderson was the eldest daughter of Henry William Henderson (1862-1931), the brother of Lord Faringdon of Buscot Park, Oxfordshire, a financier of exceptional skill and ability. The Hendersons were important Pre-Raphaelite patrons and had close relations with a number of painters including Burne-Jones (1833-1898), and John William Waterhouse (1849-1917). Works by George Frederic Watts, Ford Maddox Brown, Frederic Leighton, Gabriel Rossetti and others were in the collection Aline Henderson married Brigadier-General Wigan on 15 February 1911.
