Notes

Gregory's portrait of Mabel Galloway was received with enthusiasm at the 1888 Grosvenor Exhibition. The Art Journal found in it 'great sympathy with the sitter and with the beauty of the various accessories', while the Magazine of Art, in addition to reproducing the portrait in a full page engraved illustration, delivered the following words of praise: 'It is difficult to speak adequately of Mr. E.J. Gregory's 'Miss Mabel Galloway'. The Oriental carpet and vase, the oaken sideboard, the dress of the model-all the accessories, in fact, are rendered with consummate skill.'
