Born in Hastings, Edward Matthew Hale studied in Paris and began his career as an illustrator. He worked for The Ilustrated London News following the Russian army in the Russo-Turkish War. Later in life he concentrated on painting establishing a reputation for his highly original and fantastical depictions of sea life, as well as ambitious canvases of Classical subjects.
