Exhibited: Royal Academy 1900 (according to an inscription on the stretcher). Born in Hastings, Edward Matthew Hale studied in Paris and began his career as an illustrator. He worked for The Illustrated London News following the Russian army in the Russo-Turkish War. Later in life he concentrated on painting establishing a reputation for his highly original and fantastical depictions of sea life, as well as ambitious canvases of Classical subjects.
