A pupil of Johan Eckersberg in Oslo, Peterssen studied first under Hans Gude (lot 110) in Karlsruhe and then from 1873-77 under Wilhelm Diez in Munich. In 1878 he travelled to Italy where he stayed until 1883. Thereafter he returned to Norway, journeying occasionally abroad, notably to France in 1896 when he visited Frits Thaulow (lot 118) in Dieppe and stayed at Arques-la-Bataille in the Haute-Normandie region of northern France, where he painted the present work.
