Notes

Eižens Valpēters (1943) is part of the alternative movement of the 1960-170s. His work “Spots and Numbers” shows images of spots the artist noticed on a piece of cardboard, a symbolic footprint of the nature of chaos. The formation of lines and numbers in the foreground shapes the Cosmic order and organises the chaos. Eižens Valpēters (1943) is part of the alternative movement of the 1960-170s, a group of young people who lived as if the Soviet regime and socialist realism would not exist. They would meet in the cafe “Kaza” (The Goat), hence their nickname - “kazisti”. They drank senseless, dressed unconventionally and spent their time on seemingly aimless activities. They entertained themselves with things that upstanding Soviet citizens hadn't even heard of - cinema of Italian neorealism and French New Wave, jazz and modern art. Most importantly, they valued what most people started to lose under the strong grip of conformity - individual freedom. In 2010 Eižens Valpēters released a book called “The Uncensored. The Alternative Culture in Latvia. 1960s and 1970s of the 20th century”. In 300 pages it covered memories of the group members, photographs and works of art, thus creating a significant monument to the alternative culture. The artist has participated in restoration works of Rundāle Palace (between 1973 and 1981), Livadia Palace and Vorontsov Palace in Crimea, Jaunmoku Palace, Jewish Museum in New York etc. He had taken a strong interest in Western art forms since the 1960s. Now has been interested in signs, forms and symbols created as a result of accidental coincidences unrelated to human activity - light and shadow play, paint spills and crumblings - and taking photographs of them.
