Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale studied at the Crystal Palace School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools. Her studio was in 11 Holland Park Road, almost opposite Leighton House and she was influenced in her work by the Pre-Raphaelites and the early Italians, visiting Italy frequently. She exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1896-1935, and in 1902 was elected first female member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and to the Royal Watercolour Society. Her work also involved book illustrations and after the war, stained-glass window designs.
