Born in Guildford, United Kingdom, Symonds worked extensively around the Middle East and North America for the military before turning to painting and drawing wildlife in 1991. His work as an artist has taken him through North and South Africa, America and Europe and he has had a number of successful one man exhibitions.

In 2004 Richard began specializing in painting and drawing scale and life-size pictures and in 2006, following the sale of several paintings depicting tigers and horses, he completed his largest painting to date, "Tembo" a life-size oil painting of an African bull elephant. Also a keen and avid conservationist he has made generous donations to various wildlife charities. His work is in private collections in Russia, Hong Kong, Africa, America, Australia and throughout Europe.
