Item Overview

Description

This piece is part of a project taking materials salvaged from the renovation of the summer home of President and Jackie Kennedy by this and other Cape Cod artists. Materials from the home are verified as authentic, and have been donated to the JFK Hyannis Museum by the current owners, Ted Jr. and Kiki Kennedy. Artifacts: The base and the centerboard of this table are from the roof walk railing system. The top is from the exterior sheathing boards from JFK’s bedroom wall. The artist has a long and close history with the Kennedy family. Years ago, Jackie came to his shop with a chaise lounge that was rotting, and the two kids were fighting over it. The table shop copied it and made two, for young John and Caroline. Richard, when making this table, found in placing the base for the balusters in its center, space for eleven votive candles. This mirrors the size of the family the President grew up in, with 9 children. It is made to last for many generations, just as their memory has for all of us.
