NOTE

Elizabeth Ney was born in Münster and joined the Munich Academy of Art in 1852. She went on to study with Christian Daniel Rauch in Berlin and began a successful career under the patronage of 'Mad' King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Ney married a Scottish physician and scientist in 1863 and moved to the United States a few years later. She resumed her career in the 1880's after the birth of her two sons, building a studio in Austin, Texas which is now the Elizabeth Ney Museum. Ney played her part in early Texas history, creating busts of Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston, and becoming in her own right a revered artistic heroine of the Lone Star State.
