Provenance

(Probably) Mrs. De Stürler-Van Royen.
Mrs. H.L.M. de Stürler-Aberson, Bloemendaal; Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, 25 June 1924, lot 183, where bought by K.J.C. del Court van Krimpen, son-in-law of the previous owner.

Notes

The present pair of paintings are thought to have passed down through the generations of the Stürler-van Royen family. The couple depicted are traditionally known as Jan van Royen (1668-1719) and his wife Cornelia van Groenedijk (1672-1737). It has also been suggested that ancestors of Mrs. van Royen-Wesseluis are represented: Feito Wesseluis (1658-1732) and his wife Anna Doting (1669-1753). However, the ancestors of Mrs. Van Royen-Berger: Gerard Berger (1652-1716) and his wife Deliana Rueffert are the most likely sitters. Berger was an Utrecht brewer and due to his and his wife's social standing, this identification is most probable.
