Notes

Emeric Vidal was a paymaster in the Royal Navy who painted large panoramas of Rio de Janeiro circa 1828 (Paulo Geyer Collection, Rio de Janeiro) and other Brazilian subjects. He also produced illustrations for 'Picturesque Illustrations of Buenos Ayres and Montevideo', pub Ackerman, 1820.

Vidal visited Rio on three occasions on board HMS 'Ganges', with the current view probably dating from the third sojourn 1827-29.
