CATALOGUE NOTE

Polish born Eisman Semenovsky worked in Paris in the 1880s. The elongated format of this finely painted portrait, combined with the distinct planes of foreground and background recalls the japonisme and in particular the Japanese woodcuts which influenced 19^th century Parisian salon painting at the time.
